The Abyei region of Southern Sudan was shared by Arabized nomads and the ethnic Ngok Dinka. It could have been a bridge between North and South but instead became the cause of a conflict that continues to defy resolution, imperilling the people of the region and the Sudanese peace process as a whole. This book, a cultural and political history of the Ngok Dinka and their account of the roots of the border dispute written from a unique and privileged "insider" position, was begun in 1972 after the Addis Ababa agreement that ended the seventeen-year war between North and South Sudan.
