Can we avert disaster by a warning system based on premonitions? More than 200 people had premonitions of the avalanche of slag that too the lives of 144 people in Aberfan in 1966. Foiurteen years before the sinking of the Titanic a novelist told the story in almost perfect detail. He called his ship the Titan. A dream of a devastating volcanic explosion on an island, possibly French... a prophecy of an erupting volcano in the French West Indies.... and shortly afterwards, the eruption of Mont Pelee on martinique which killed 40,000 people. Could these tragedies have been prevented? Dr J. C. Barker, a London psychiatrist, thought they could, and he conceived the idea of a central clearing house where people might record their warnings if thir "seismic sense" told them that something momemntous was about to occur. Acting on this belief, Dr. Barker organised the British Premonitions Bureau in 1967. Soon after, the Central Premonitions Registry was created in New York. Reoirts come to the bureaus about events as disparate as space shots and murders. Most are from ordinary people who are puzzled by their strange dreams, and the scientific study of such people. Mr Greenhouse tell us, may lead to significant breakthroughs in understanding the mystery of precognition. Certainly the emergence of new psychics including Alan Vaughan and Lorna Middleton alone justifies the work of the registeries. In his book Mr Greenhouse also discusses the nature of clairvoyance, the work of many noted prophets, predicitons which have come true and the previsons of the future.
