A. makes its appear ance as a companion-book to this authors The Southern Americas, and generally follows the method developed in the earlier book of alternating excerpts selected from diaries, letters and other original sources with the author-editors own commentary which is printed in oblique type, there are differences in purpose as well as technique that are perhaps worth noting. First and foremost, the earlier volume dealt with a more or less alien society and culture as far as the North American reader is concerned, and consequently the attention to factual material within the basic frame work of interpretation was necessarily much greater than in the present chronicle, which deals with an historical development whose broad out lines are more or less familiar to the reader. For pretty much the same reason, it was possible and felt to be desirable to employ a more infor mal tone at times a colloquial and even intimate one in tracing this panoramic narrative of American discovery and change for the reader in any one of the forty-eight states.
