In many rural areas, groundwater is the only feasible way of providing safe, reliable water supplies. However, developing groundwater is not always straightforward. To meet the targets set out in the Millennium Development Goals, more attention needs to be paid to finding and developing groundwater in a sustainable, cost-effective and participatory manner. Developing Groundwater provides a user-friendly guide to this key topic, bringing together for the first time the wide range of techniques required to develop groundwater for community water supplies. This practical manual gives information on effective techniques for siting wells and boreholes, assessing the sustainability of sources, constructing and testing the yield of boreholes and wells, and monitoring groundwater quality. The authors set the technical aspects of rural water supply firmly in their socio-economic context, so that readers can take proper account of community concerns as well as purely engineering questions. Packed with helpful illustrations this book is indispensable for all rural water supply project staff in developing countries. Alan MacDonald, Jeff Davies and John Chilton are hydrogeologists at the British Geological Survey with more than 75 years' experience amongst them. They have worked extensively in Africa, Asia and the Pacific in partnership with government departments, NGOs, research institutes and rural communities. Much of their work has focussed on the practical issues of developing groundwater resources for rural water supply. Roger Calow is a water resource economist and policy specialist with the British Geological Survey, and has worked extensively in Africa, Asia and the Middle East on rural water supply and management projects.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/d4191055/developing-groundwater-alan-macdonald-9781853395963.jpg|9781853395963|Developing Groundwater : Paperback : Practical Action Publishing : 9781853395963 : 15 Dec 2005 : This manual details techniques for siting wells and boreholes, assessing the sustainability of sources, constructing and testing the yield of them, monito ...|new|1|1|1|29.95|0|GBP|Alan MacDonald|Practical Action Publishing|15 Dec 2005|Water supply & treatment 9781853396441|A New Weave of Power, People and Politics|29.77|https://wordery.com/a-new-weave-of-power-people-and-politics-lisa-veneklasen-9781853396441|This field manual provides a well-tested approach for promoting citizen participation. It embraces policies not only for localising the control of production and markets, but also for the Right to Food, people's access to and control over land, water and genetic resources, and for promoting the use of environmentally sustainable approaches to production. It addresses the current problems of hunger and malnutrition, as well as rural poverty, that have become a priority challenge for international policy. The latest FAO figures show the number of chronically hungry in developing countries has been increasing over the last decade at a rate of almost 5 million per year - from 800 million to 852 million. Yet the rules that govern food and agriculture at all levels - local, national and international - are designed a priori to facilitate not local production and consumption, but international trade. In this Practical Action Working Paper , Michael Windfuhr shows how the Food Sovereignty policy framework has developed to address this dilemma, what the basic assumptions are, analyses how Food Sovereignty relates to the current problems in rural and agricultural policies and discusses possible policy constraints to its adoption. What emerges is a persuasive and highly political argument for refocusing the control of food production and consumption within democratic processes rooted in localized food systems.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/ed5f2656/food-sovereignty-michael-windfuhr-9781853396106.jpg|9781853396106|Food Sovereignty : Paperback : Practical Action Publishing : 9781853396106 : 15 Dec 2005 : In this Practical Action Working Paper, Michael Windfuhr shows how the Food Sovereignty policy framework has developed to address this dilemma, what the basic a ...|new|1|1|3|9.95|0|GBP|Michael Windfuhr|Practical Action Publishing|15 Dec 2005|Agriculture & related industries 9781853396137|Where There is No Artist|29.77|https://wordery.com/where-there-is-no-artist-petra-rohr-rouendaal-9781853396137|A simple to use catalogue, containing a wealth of illustrations, with a unique combination of written text and visual aids.Visual aids can provide information, provoke discussion and discovery, and make difficult ideas easy to understand. For many remote areas beyond the reach of a national grid, micro-hydro is the only economic option. Where flow is limited, but high heads are available, the Pelton wheel is one of the most useful turbines. The Micro-hydro Pelton Turbine Manual is written to enable the reader to design and manufacture Pelton turbines with capacities from a few hundred Watts to around 100kw, though much of the information is relevant for larger units too. Aimed at readers with a general engineering workshop background, the emphasis is on simple technology, so that the turbines can be made in small workshops with basic engineering facilities. More advanced processes are discussed for those with access to better manufacturing facilities. As well as detailing all the important aspects of design, the book covers basic theory, turbine selection, manufacture, installation, testing and problem-solving. The manual is well illustrated and contains a comprehensive appendices, containing manufacturing reference information and the derivation of equations used. But what can we learn from the ways that poor people already manage their money? What are the essential elements that they prize so much that they are willing to pay high interest rates to money lenders, or spend time and energy setting up elaborate savings clubs? The poor and their money emphasizes the pivotal role of savings in the lives of the poor, and in so doing overturns the common misconception that they are 'too poor to save'. Building on the huge acclaim that followed its first publication, the second edition of The Poor and Their Money brings readers up to date with microfinance developments in the twenty first century, including India's self-help group movement, village banks, and microfinance on Wall Street. Microfinance programmes can help poor people improve their lives but generally such programmes do not reach the extremely poor and the chronic poor: casual labourers in remote rural areas, ethnic and indigenous minorities, older people, widows, migrants, bonded labourers and others. To counter this, governments, NGOs and donors have started to mount programmes explicitly targeting the poorest. This book is the first attempt to examine such initiatives and identify 'what works for the poorest'. It asks the questions: what are the characteristics of extreme poverty? how can we target the very poor? how can we ensure that women are not excluded? Through a set of carefully selected and well-integrated papers this book analyses innovative ultra-poor programmes from around the world and explores the lessons that emerge from this new and important body of knowledge. What Works for the Poorest? should be read by staff of donor agencies and NGOs, students of development studies and interested readers who are concerned about chronic poverty.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/ef7ae681/what-works-for-the-poorest-david-lawson-9781853396908.jpg|9781853396908|What Works for the Poorest? : Paperback : Practical Action Publishing : 9781853396908 : 01 Jan 2010 : This book is the first attempt to examine 'what works for the poorest' and analyses innovative ultra-poor programmes from around the world and explo ...|new|1|1|1|24.95|0|GBP|David Lawson|Practical Action Publishing|01 Jan 2010|Poverty & unemployment 9781853431456|Plea for a Measure of Abnormality|29.99|https://wordery, [PU: Free Association Books]<

Lime has many other uses, but this book is specifically about its use in building and construction, for which it has a proven track record through several millennia. Despite this long and successful history, in recent times it has been largely neglected whilst ordinary Portland cement has dominated the market. Building with Lime seeks to rectify this situation. The book is a revised, updated and improved edition of the very successful one of the same title, by the same authors, published by the same organization in 1997. This book is intended as a starting point for those considering lime as a building material, and as a general reference to the broad range of uses for lime in construction. It shows how to make the best use of different types of lime, whether extracted locally or transported from further afield. The book provides information that will assist manufacturers, policy-makers, investors, suppliers, and the builders and owners or users of the buildings themselves to understand the value of lime.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/829f75b3/building-with-lime-stafford-holmes-9781853395475.jpg|9781853395475|Building with Lime : Paperback : Practical Action Publishing : 9781853395475 : 15 Dec 2002 : This book is intended as a starting point for those considering lime as a building material, and as a general reference to the broad range of uses for lime in ...|new|1|1|3|24.95|0|GBP|Stafford Holmes|Practical Action Publishing|15 Dec 2002|Building construction & materials 9781853396137|Where There is No Artist|29.77|https://wordery.com/where-there-is-no-artist-petra-rohr-rouendaal-9781853396137|A simple to use catalogue, containing a wealth of illustrations, with a unique combination of written text and visual aids.Visual aids can provide information, provoke discussion and discovery, and make difficult ideas easy to understand. Isabel Menzies Lyth has formulated a way of thinking about social structures as forms of defence - as ways of avoiding experiences of anxiety, guilt, doubt and uncertainty - that is as challenging as it is persuasive. She believes that the individual is engaged in a lifelong struggle against primitive anxiety. A psychoanalyst writing in the tradition of Klein and Bion, her writings span more than thirty years of research in applied psychoanalysis and are here collected in the first of two volumes. In her classical paper on nursing, she writes: "By the nature of her profession the nurse is at considerable risk of being flooded by intense and unmanageable anxiety." The organisation and bureaucracy of the nursing profession have failed to contain the high levels of anxiety and stress that nurses experience, attempting instead to take practical steps to enhance recruitment and stem job wastage. The 'real nature' of the problem remains untouched. This is a controversial collection, which makes available to a wider public an important part of the research tradition of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations. The author extends her analytic range to cover themes of children in long-stay hospitals and day-care institutions, and the maternal role today. All the essays combine her two main professional interests: the dynamics of the individual in his or her own right and the psychodynamics of the social world. Books Isabel E. P.

By describing some of the commonly followed construction processes and explaining many of the practical design considerations, this book will help readers to avoid many problems and disappointments while their garden or landscape project is still in the design stage. The technical design of both formal and informal water gardens is described, and construction techniques that will be cost-effective yet durable are considered. The other fundamentals of water-level control and maintaining water clarity, both chemically and biologically, are also examined. Several case studies are included that show the design and construction process of individual water-garden projects, and explain the reasoning behind the designs, the negotiations involved and ultimate conclusions, together with schedules of works and budget costs.Salient points: * There is no other book on this subject aimed specifically at garden designers and landscape contractors; * Important case studies and costings featured; * Formal (small & largish gardens) and informal (ponds, lakes & waterfalls) water gardens are covered; * 'Before, during & after' photos of construction procedures included; * Detailed plans and line drawings amplify the text; * Detailed consideration of pond or lake lining materials covered; * Author is expert with own company making water gardens since 1982.|Books|https://wordery.com/jackets/19069346/water-garden-construction-a-technical-guide-for-designers-2015-9781853411502.jpg|9781853411502|Water Garden Construction: A Technical Guide for Designers 2015 : Paperback : Packard Publishing Ltd : 9781853411502 : 03 Aug 2015 : Water garden construction for garden designers and landscape contractors.|new|1|1|1|25|0|GBP||Packard Publishing Ltd|03 Aug 2015|Garden design & planning 9781853396694|Managing Humanitarian Relief|30.99|https://wordery.com/managing-humanitarian-relief-eric-james-9781853396694|Responding Effectively to humanitarian disasters is far from straightforward, and relief workers often find themselves in a world of uncoordinated , highly competitive agencies working with cross-cutting purposes. It also describes the most detailed accounts to date of poor people's day-to-day financial strategies ? their financial diaries. P.
