The diagnosis and treatment of the patient with critically impaired walking abilities present the busy physician with a formidable challenge. This book provides a comprehensive account of the various balance, posture and gait disorders, and of the methods for their effective management. The text is divided into five sections dealing with the normal and developmental aspects, the assessment, the clinical disorders and the rehabilitation of balance and gait, as well as with the specifics of gait and balance disorders in the elderly. The authors discuss common clinical problems: difficulty in keeping one's balance, dizziness, or difficulty in walking. Symptoms like these are attributable to a host of different disorders of the motor system, the muscoloskeletal apparatus, the vestibular system, or even psychological imbalance, so the editors have taken an cross-disciplinary approach to the subject. Neurologists, psychiatrists, physiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, neuro-otologists, geriatricians, and physiotherapists have been recruited as contributors and encouraged to tread across frontiers so as to provide a multi-directional view of the various ailments. The aim of this volume is not to exhaust any specific disease resulting in the impairment of gait, balance, or posture. Rather, the editors emphasize the need for physicians dealing with gait and balance disorders to broaden their knowledge of other medical specialties, and set out from a more exhaustive base when looking for the cause of disease.
