Great Britain, the British Standard Institution definitions deserve special attention because they have been selected by the Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development (AGARD)1* to form the basis for a multilingual aeronautical dictionary.In order to facilitate the publication of a handy edition, confined to the English-German version of the more essential ICAO and AGARD definitions most urgently needed in Germany, the competent authorities, agencies and personalities have approved the utilization of the English-German definition material in the present form. These definitions should meet requirements in the following fields: aeronautical research and development; aircraft industry;civil aviation, including air traffic control and air weather services; military aviation with special emphasis on publications, technical and language training, specifications and procurement; translation activities, both commercial and military. The special thanks of the publishers, editor and author are herey expressed to all authorities, agencies and individuals concerned, a complete list of which is given below. The author assisted in the formulation of the German version of the ICAO definitions and finally revised the German version of the AGARD definitions which he formulated in accordance with the decisions of the ICAO Translation Board.In cases in which ICAO and the British Standards Institution are using different definitions for one and the same term, both versions have been included in this compilation. Such discrepancies might inspire AGARD, in consultation with the British Standards Institution, to reach full agreement with ICAO upon a standardized definition of these terms.
