Many a singer is tolerated and even encouraged on French and German operatic stages, both small and large, who would be hissed off the boards in Italy. Caruso, however, did not fail to secure engagements, though none of his earlier appearances gave any indication of the fame to which he was to attain later. He made his debut in the Teatro Nuovo in Naples, where he appeared four times in the title-role of an unimportant opera, "L'Amico Francesco," by Morelli. Enrico received ten lire for each performance, with a pair of stage shoes, a suit of fleshings, and a neckerchief "thrown in." Twenty-six years later the artist who had been glad to accept a fee of ten lire for his first performance in grand opera, refused the $12,000 a performance offered him for a series of appearances in Lima, Peru. In Morelli's opera Caruso made no very definite impression, one way or another. The general opinion was that his voice had a sympathetic quality of tone, but that it was rather small and lacking in volume. This opinion may have been more or less a result of Caruso's following Vergine's instructions to sing with restraint and not to let out his voice, for Vergine's theories insisted that the forte was the bane of the operatic voice and that stress would kill it. At any rate, his negative virtues sufficed to secure him another opportunity. He was engaged for the opera at Caserta, in Campania, a garrison town about twenty-one miles from Naples. In Caserta he sang Turiddu, Camoens and-some prefer to consider this his real debut-Faust in Boito's "Mefistofele."
