A small town boy enlists in the Air Force with the hopes of becoming a fighter pilot, but soon finds that his only aptitude is for marksmanship, and as a result he is assigned to a post as a shooting instructor at a base near his hometown. Set in West Virginia, France, Britain, and Germany, and shot on location in Thousand Oaks and Channel Islands, California. 10 x 8 inches. The first big-budget Western to feature an African American hero (Woody Strode), released just as the US Civil Rights movement was taking hold. Strode masterfully plays an innocent cavalry sergeant accused of killing his commander and the commander's daughter. Though the rest of the cavalry is quick to express its deep-seated racism by the accusation, Strode proves himself the better man by warning them of an upcoming Apache attack. Though it was not one of director John Ford's most popular films, it remains a breakthrough film worthy of his oeuvre. Shot on location in Monument Valley and Mexican Hat, Utah. 10 x 8 inches. However, when the Tailhook scandal erupted and the conduct of some aviators was attributed to the "flyboy" image projected in the movie, Top Gun became a liability. Lawrence Suid's inside revelations about the Navy's cinematic input range from pre-World War I to post-Cold War. More than 100 films, as varied as Annapolis and Hunt for Red October, are analyzed for their portrayal of the Navy.
