SUMMARY: Thank you, our Stalin, for a happy childhood.' 'Thank you, dear Marshal [Stalin], for our freedom, for our children's happiness, for life'. Between the Russian Revolution and the Cold War, Soviet public culture was so dominated by the power of the state that slogans like these appeared routinely in newspapers, on posters, and in government proclamations. In this penetrating historical study, Jeffrey Brooks draws on years of research into the most influential and widely circulated Russian newspapers--including Pravda, Isvestiia, and the army paper Red Star--to explain the origins, the nature, and the effects of this unrelenting idealization of the state, the Communist Party, and the leader. Brooks shows how, beginning with Lenin, the Communists established a state monopoly of the media that absorbed literature, art, and science into a stylized and ritualistic public culture--a form of political performance that became its own reality and excluded other forms of public reflection. He presents and explains scores of self-congratulatory newspaper articles, including tales of Stalin's supposed achievements and virtue, accounts of the country's allegedly dynamic economy, and warnings about the decadence and cruelty of the capitalist West. Brooks pays particular attention to the role of the press in the reconstruction of the Soviet cultural system to meet the Nazi threat during World War II and in the transformation of national identity from its early revolutionary internationalism to the ideology of the Cold War. He concludes that the country's one-sided public discourse and the pervasive idea that citizens owed the leader gratitude for the 'gifts' of goods and services led ultimately to the inability of late Soviet Communism to diagnose its own ills, prepare alternative policies, and adjust to new realities. The first historical work to explore the close relationship between language and the implementation of the Stalinist-Leninist program, Thank You, Comrade Stalin! is a compelling account of Soviet public culture as reflected through the country's press. SUMMARY: Laurence Sterne was in his mid-forties when the publication of 'Tristram Shandy' catapulted him from obscurity into unprecedented literary fame. The story of how a provincial clergyman became the most fashionable writer of his day is extraordinary, and all the more remarkable for having been engineered by its subject. "I wrote not to be fed, but to be famous", Laurence Sterne declared of his comic masterpiece, and in order to achieve his ambition he became an assiduous networker, as astute a self-publicist as any modern author could hope to be. Shocked critics of 'Tristram Shandy' denounced his bawdy novel as a scandal to the cloth, but Sterne revelled in the celebrity his age's obsession with novelty and fashion allowed him. He at last found compensation for a life characterized by alternating moods of gaiety and gloom. Unhappily married to a woman who suffered a nervous breakdown and at one time believed herself to be the Queen of Bohemia, Sterne became notorious for his sexual and sentimental liaisons with other women. His second book, 'A Sentimental Journey', transmuted his experiences into literary expressions of moral feeling. Dependent for so much of his life on patrons, it was the patronage of the reading public that was to secure his livelihood. 'Tristram Shandy' remains one of the most innovative and influential novels in world literature, and Ian Campbell Ross makes full use of available materials to examine Sterne's life and career and the cult of the celebrity author. Large Octavo., Oxford University Press, 2002, New Delhi, India: Global Vision Publishing House, 2009 In the present volume, author ventures into the challenging task by identifying and unveiling the ideological underpinnings operative in the construction and deconstruction of the Adamic myth in the Judeo-Christian scenario. He delves deep into the intricacies of the literary forms of myths, metaphors and Midrash involved in interpreting, legitimizing, or reinforcing later-day ethno-historical claims of a particular group of people against the prevailing amicable or inimical background. The ideological assertions of these literary forms, enforcing the consciously chosen traditional or hereditary authority, seek to overpower the currently popular, rational, legitimate or democratic authority. At this juncture, one cannot turn a blind eye to the legitimate or questionable political transactions on the ideological sites by the powers vying with each other to gain the dominant space. In exposing these ideological interplays, the author deploys the tools from the world of the biblical, mythological, theological, literary, historical, anthropological, linguistic, and hermeneutical disciplines. This is the first book in the Floodgate Poetry Series, an annual series collecting three short collections by three poets in each volume. Campbell McGraths PicassoMao is a short collection of poems told from the point of view of the two historical figures, spanning seventy-five years of history. McGrath is the author of twelve collections of poetry, and has been awarded Guggenheim and MacArthur Genius Fellowships. He is the Philip and Patricia Frost Professor of Creative Writing at Florida International University. Jenna Bazzells Homeland describes a troubled family life, beginning with a drug deal gone bad, redeemed by time and the pleasures of the natural world. Bazzell won the 2010 AWP Intro Journal Award and an Honorable Mention from the Academy of American Poets Prize for poems included in the collection. Martin Anthony Calls The Fermi Sea explores a near future of urban decay, nanobots and holograms against a backdrop of lost love. Call earned his MFA in Creative Writing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 2008. Reviews of Floodgate Poetry Series Vol. 1: This collection of chapbooks offers the reader a startling variety. Bazzells Homeland is a compelling blend of narrative coherence and lyric lift. The opening poem, Bubba Pub, offers us the DNA of her entire chapbook: poems anchored in place and relationship. The poem describes a drug deal the speaker goes on with her mother, and a line like the long O of a gun barrel tunnels back to the torso of a man both shows the horror of being robbed during the interaction and how suddenly night takes on strangeness. It has been said that literature should either make the familiar strange or the strange familiar; Homeland does both with alacrity. The Fermi Sea, by Call, explores a distinctly 21st-century theology, one where the Holy Ghost is turned holographically into the Hologhost. And Call makes use of poetic puns throughout his chapbook, all of which are charmingly and even philosophically attractive. And, finally, in PicassoMao, McGrath opens up history, art, and politics to the purview of poetry. The unlikely pairing of these two figures allows for many unexpected and exciting overlaps and divergences. Campbell offers us entry into the minds of his poetic subjects in persona poems that delight with their ambition. Floodgate brings together three poets of stunning range and ability. Okla Elliott, author of The Cartographers Ink and From the Crooked Timber In PicassoMao Campbell McGrath perfects the persona in a series of historical poems that span seventy-five years. While the founder of Cubism decries the idiocy of war, the founder of the Red Army draws an egg, failing a class in life drawing. Ample, dazzling, and elegantly crafted, these poems demonstrate a great mind enacting other great minds. Oscar Wilde once wrote, A mask tells us more than a face. These McGrath poems tell us much more than biographythey demonstrate cultural shifts and perception, a sophisticated and compassionate worldview, the poets intellect shining through. Denise Duhamel, author of Blowout and Queen for a Day: Selected and New Poems, and guest editor of The Best American Poetry 2013 Moved to praise Jenna Bazzells poems, one could say they transcend the subject of a family relationship. But what the poems really work so ardently to do is stayrooted in their rich Southern landscape, and true to the woman they remember. Continually uncovering new angles for approaching her lyric narrative sequence, Bazzell closes each poem with such well-crafted care that, turning a page, the reader is both surprised that more could follow and drawn further into material so deeply felt it will never be finished. Index. Bound in the original patterned gray boards cloth with a maroon cloth spine lettered in shiny gold. From the Dust Jacket: "Since it was first published in September 1915, JESUS THE CHRIST has been a classic text on the life and ministry of the Savior. Elder Marion G. Romney has said, 'One who gets the understanding, the vision, and the spirit of the resurrected Lord through a careful study of the text JESUS THE CHRIST by Elder James E. Talmage will find that he has greatly increased his moving faith in our glorified Redeemer.' In his preface to the first edition, Elder Talmage wrote: 'The author has departed from the course usually followed by writers on the Life of Jesus Christ, which course, as a rule, begins with the birth of Mary's Babe and ends with the ascension of the slain and risen Lord from Olivet. The treatment embodied in these pages, in addition to the narrative of the Lord's life in the flesh, comprises the antemortal existence and activities of the world's Redeemer, the revelations and personal manifestations of the glorified and exalted Son of God during the apostolic period of old and in modern times, the assured nearness of the Lord's second advent, and predicted events beyond -- all so far as the Holy Scriptures make it plain. It is particularly congruous and appropriate that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- The only Church that affirms authority based on specific revelation and commission to use the Lord's Holy Name as a distinctive designation -- should set forth her doctrines concerning the Messiah and His mission.' Dr. Talmage first presented his study on the Savior as a series of lectures delivered under the auspices of the Deseret Sunday School Union Board at the LDS University in Salt Lake City from September 1904 to April 1906. He was subsequently asked by the First Presidency of the Church to publish the lectures in book form. Because of other commitments, he was unable to complete this assignment for several years. On December 8, 1911, Dr. Talmage was ordained a member of the Council of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Less than three years later he was able at last to continue his work on the manuscript, writing in longhand in a council room on the fourth floor of the Salt Lake Temple. As chapters were completed, he presented them to the First Presidency, members of the Twelve, and Sunday School board members. In his journal under date of April 19, 1915, Elder Talmage wrote: 'Finished the actual writing on the book JESUS THE CHRIST, to which I have devoted every spare hour since settling down to the work of composition on September 14th last. Had it not been that I was privileged to do this work in the Temple it would be at present far from completion. I have felt the inspiration of the place and have appreciated the privacy and quietness incident thereto. I hope to proceed with the work of revision without delay.' Published more than eight decades ago and translated into many languages, JESUS THE CHRIST has become a truly classic volume in Mormon literature.". Reprint of the 1915 edition. Hardcover. This symposium, compiled and edited for the International African Institute, is concered with the study of a fundamental aspect of the organization of so-called 'primitive' societies. Professor Radcliffe-Brown, in an introductory essay, reviews the general principles underlying African systems of kinship and marriage, and traces the legal and social implications of the rules and customs regulating kinship and marraige in various societies both past and present. Each of the other contributors analyses a distinctive pattern of kinship organization and marriage custom as expressed in different socieities in Africa today. The study is of great importance to scientific sociology, and also has a direct bearing on those urgent practical problems which arise when peoples who have lifed in a largely kin-bound society are reacting to pressures and incentives from another social world. It is appropriate that a selection from the Paston Letters should be added to The World's Classic, for they are unmatched in scope and variety of interest by any other medieval collection in English. The Letters reflect not only the lawlessness of the fifteenth century, as shown in the recurring usurpation of Paston lands, but also the ordinary affairs of family life, estate management, and marriage prospects and negotiations. The writers express themselves with a clarity and vigour that is remarkable at this early date; we are able to study the English language in practical use shortly before the introduction of printing; and from the letters we can sense somethig of the reality of everyday speech. Professor Norman Davies has prepared from the original manuscripts a selection of 142 letters designed to present as many of the principal concerns of the Pastons as possible. For the convenience of the reader he has modernized the language. His special knowledge of the Letters has enabled him to add an introduction, notes, and a glossary which give this edition a particular value. 288 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . For hundreds of years, we have had books on manners. The subjevct preoccupies us. What is acceptable behaviour? This book is not a book about manners or etiquette. It is about the rudeness of the modern world, and the sense of outrage that infects us every day as we discover that other people are - generally speaking - crass, selfish, and inconsiderate. The author asks why rudeness is a universal flashpoint and examines specific sources of affront. What ever happened to 'please' and 'thank you'? Why does the customer have to do all the work? Why do people behave in public as if they are in private? What ever happened to the idea of public-spiritedness? It's a big rant, essentially. But on the plust side, it's quite short and has virtually no hard facts to detain the reader or slow the argument. Potential readers are advised that there is nothing about pandas or punctuation in this book, and that anyone scouring the text for grammatical errors will be considered a bit of a bore. Is that a rude thing to say? As always, it isn't easy to be categorical. 414 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) . The novel epitomizes some of the notions of English Dissent and the French Enlightenment in the career of the virtuously triumphant hero through a world of personal and institutional corruption. The central figure is between Hugh Trevor and Wakefield, an attractive but immoral trickster whose conversion is the novel's central concern. Englightened reason wins in the end over emotionalism and selfish cunning. The author presents a moral position in which reason and feeling complement each other in a way of life characterized by altruism and candour. 511 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.). 1st University University Press Edition. "The following morning, Mother led Israel and Elizabeth out of the house and spoke to them as follows: 'Last night, when we were in the worship of God, I saw a number of souls rise from the dead, and come into the resurrection of life. And when you [Israel] was here before, I saw your mother [his mother had been dead thirty years] and when you was released, and your flesh turned to its natural color again, she was released also and came into the resurrection...Israel, you have begun to bear for other souls, and you must never give out, till the last soul is gathered in. When you get home, tell your father and stepmother that your mother is risen from the dead.'" - from the book.A fascinating introduction to the world of the early Shakers, this anthology documents the contributions to Shaker religion made by women during its first seventy years. This period (1780-1851) saw Mother Ann Lee's complex legacy as the founder of a new religion realized in a network of nineteen separatist celibate communities in eight states. By giving us a closer look at the ways in which women influenced the evolution of the religion during this formative era, this book contributes to a more accurate vision of Shakerism and highlights the ways in which gender can play an important role in the creation of a new religious institution. 294pp. Previous owners inscription to ffep. . Stop doubting now and believe. By saying this to the Apostle Thomas, Jesus was conveying to us that it is okay for us to probe scientifically into the workings of our universe so that we may all understand His truth and be witness to His kingdom. To fully appreciate the understandings presented in this book one must first resolve to forget everything previously understood about our world. In our magnificent universe nothing is as it appears to be. The single goal of this book is to bring about a better understanding of the divine relationship between science and theology. We are taught that a choice must be made in whether we believe what science is telling us about our universe or what the gospels are telling us about our universe. Universities across this great land preach scientific truth just as religions and church organizations preach that we must disregard scientific discovery and have faith in what was written about our Savior and our world in the gospels. This book, THE TRUTH The Illumination of Conscience will prove that science has never given us a single understanding that has, in any way, discredited anything the gospels have taught us about our world. We should also, know that the gospels of Christ have not stated anything that is not in total agreement with what science has shown us about our world, either. THE TRUTH The Illumination of Conscience will take you on a journey like no other book has before and by doing so it will prove to you that the scientific discoveries made over the years do nothing but reinforce all that we know from the way, the truth and the life. Let your consciousness be illuminated and in so doing we will illuminate the conscience of the world, together. This item ships from multiple locations. SYNOPSIS: A decade after he published his famous first novel, A Long and Happy Life, Reynolds Price began a serious study of the Hebrew and Greek narratives which combine to form that crucial document of Western civilization we call the Bible. Since early childhood, Price had known Bible stories of patriarchs, kings, prophets, and the boldly assertive women of Ancient Israel, as well as the four-fold gospel story of the life of Jesus -- another Jew whose career has exerted immense fascination on subsequent history. In Price's early middle age, however, he felt compelled to go further than simple reading; he began to investigate the rudiments of the Bible stories as deeply as possible. He focused on the Hebrew and Greek originals that are unquestionably the most discussed and annotated texts with the close assistance of other literal versions and of numerous scholarly commentaries, old and modern. He was likewise encouraged and helped by frequent discussions with distinguished scholar-colleagues at Duke University, where he has taught since 1958. As the work continued over several years, Price expanded his translation attempts into the Greek New Testament. And soon he had begun an informal navigation of the shoals of Koine Greek -- that common Mediterranean dialect in which a good deal of the business of the Roman empire was conducted and in which the gospels and all other books of the New Testament were written. Gradually, his translations of separate incidents from the four gospels evolved into a literal translation of the whole of the oldest gospel, Mark. His first version of Mark appeared, along with other translations from the Old and New Testaments, in A Palpable God (Atheneum, 1978). The book met with a wide and favorable reception from scholars, writers, and critics. Price's studies have expanded steadily in the intervening decades; and in recent years he has worked at both a revised version of his early translation of Mark and an entirely new literal version of the Gospel of John (John is the last published gospel and almost surely the one that comes, at its core, from an eyewitness of the life of Jesus). To his new translations, Price has added extensive prefaces, which he hopes will be of interest to scholars and casual readers alike. The prefaces are the result not only of his own work as a translator and his discussions with New Testament scholars of more than twenty years reading in textual exegesis, in the life of the first-century Roman world (including the immensely complicated realities of Roman Palestine), but also in consideration of the widespread and ongoing attempt to reconsider the historical bases of our knowledge of Jesus. Finally, after twice teaching a semester-long seminar on the gospels of Mark and John at Duke University, Price has written a gospel of his own. The new gospel, which he calls "apocryphal" in a non-canonical sense, makes a fresh attempt at a compact narrative of the life and work of Jesus. Yet it is an attempt grounded meticulously in the earliest available historic, biographical, and theological evidence. In a third and final preface, Price describes the motive for writing a gospel of his own. In brief, his new gospel (like the whole of Three Gospels) aims to render the highest possible contemporary justice to a life lived two thousand years ago, a life presented in -- and, to a startling extent, still recoverable from -- documents that have proved the most influential in Western history. The author of "The Frog in the Kettle" takes the spiritual pulse of America at the dawn of a new millennium. With revealing statistics, this book shows that the church is at a crucial juncture in history--a time of rapid change in which we must begin to anticipate the world's spiritual needs in order to meet them. From Wikipedia: "George Barna (born 1955) is the founder of The Barna Group, a market research firm specializing in studying the religious beliefs and behavior of Americans, and the intersection of faith and culture. He currently serves as the senior executive in Metaformation, an organization committed to "helping people optimize their life journey." Barna grew up a Catholic in New York City and Princeton, New Jersey, but has since engaged with evangelical Christianity] He graduated summa cum laude from Boston College with a Bachelor's degree in sociology (along with a minor or secondary focus in religion), and holds two master's degrees from Rutgers University and a doctorate from Dallas Baptist University. Barna leads seminars for church leaders, speaks at ministry conferences, has taught at seminaries, and has been a pastor. As an author, he has written more than four dozen books on contemporary Christian issues, with topics ranging from worldviews, trends and children to church life, spiritual growth and leadership. He also writes columns which are published on the website of Barna Group. As a result of his work, Barna has coined several terms, including: Mosaic Generation the demographic profile of those born between 1984 and 2002. According to Barna, this generation is "very mosaic in every aspect of their life." He continues, "There's no attribute that really dominates like you might have seen with prior generations." Barna also describes this group as "comfortable with contradiction", "post-modern" and exhibiting "non-linear" thinking. Theolographics the theological perspectives and applications of people; Spiritainment a portmanteau which refers to the blending of spirituality and entertainment, toward influencing people's spiritual perspectives. He is married to Nancy Barna, and they have three adopted daughters two from Guatemala, one from Russia. Barna is known for providing extensive surveys regarding Christianity and the state of the church. Among his findings that have generated substantial interest or controversy in recent years include: children are the most important population segment to minister to because of their spiritual teachability and developmental vulnerability; God transforms people's lives in connection with a 10-stop journey that is surprisingly consistent across people groups Christian churches in the United States have been generally ineffective vessels for evangelism and discipleship: most Protestant pastors are neither called to nor competent in leadership; less than one out of every five born again adults possesses a Biblical world view; every church engages in marketing, but few do it well; mass media has the most dramatic effect on people's behavior and beliefs; alternative forms of church life including house churches are growing rapidly; a growing group of spiritually devout Christians, known as Revolutionaries, are embracing a post-congregational narrative that is reshaping spiritual life in the U.S.; most "church growth" is simply the recycling of church-goers from one congregation to another. divorce rate amongst born-again Christians is significantly higher than that for atheist/agnostics. A more recent 2008 Barna report shows a closer divorce rate gap between born-again Christians (32% had been divorced) and atheist/agnostics (30% had been divorced). Barna considers Maximum Faith to be his most significant book. Others that he cites as being especially valuable include Transforming Children into Spiritual Champions, Think Like Jesus, The Power of Vision, and Revolution. Since 2009 he has been a writer for hire, penning books such as The Cause Within You, for Matthew., Regal Books, 2001, Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010. CAMBRIDGE : 2010. In the present volume, author ventures into the challenging task by identifying and unveiling the ideological underpinnings operative in the construction and deconstruction of the Adamic myth in the Judeo-Christian scenario. In this striking new paradigm of God, truth, and the meaning of life, Stewart describes the soul and how it evolves using the human body. He offers us his experience of the soul’s journey and graphically illustrates how it reaches beyond our world to higher beings for guidance. He shines a brilliant light on the mysteries and powers of hidden entities we have always called gods. In the introductory volume of the New Awareness Trilogy, Stewart lays the foundation for the striking volumes to follow. He teaches us how we can tap the hidden power of our souls and get exactly what we want from life. We learn how our spirit guides can accelerate our spiritual growth. Here, we meet his guides, and how they have shared their view of the soul and life beyond our world. Through techniques of channeled wisdom, Stewart shares with us what his guides have taught him: what the soul is, how it functions in a physical world, and why it chooses the experiences of this world. He shows us how humanity is the fulfillment of a measured purpose, in which we each have a role. If you have ever wondered why we are here, here are some answers! Stewart graphically outlines the nature of the inner self that is the true you. Here are ancient truths presented in a modern perspective, a new form of mysticism: you can choose your destiny and discover your own unique purpose in life. "Well-written and informative." SUMMARY: Thank you, our Stalin, for a happy childhood.' 'Thank you, dear Marshal [Stalin], for our freedom, for our children's happiness, for life'. In the present volume, author ventures into the challenging task by identifying and unveiling the ideological underpinnings operative in the construction and deconstruction of the Adamic myth in the Judeo-Christian scenario. Taken by a flying reptile with wings as big as a bus to the farthest reaches of Siberia, Adam once again finds himself at the center of a plot to take down the evil organization Geneflow, who plan to create an apocalypse, ending life on earth as we know it, in order to create a world of hyper-evolved beings. Adam will have to join forces with a deadly pterosaur named Keera, and with the help of his old friend Zed, they'll need to risk everything to stop Geneflow once and for all and restore order to the world., Puffin Books, 2013, 6, Nepean, Ontario, Canada: Athena Books, 1991. A lovely clean fresh copy -appears to have been very gently and respectfully read. The following are excerpts from the text: "How did the life on this world get started? In fact, what is life? Is there anything that we can point to and say, there, that is life? Remove that, and you remove life from the body?" "The soul transcends us from simple animals fearing only death to higher intelligences, asking about the nature of the universe. It is a mechanism for growth." "We know that life adapts, or tries to adapt, to everything it encounters. Why would it not have adapted to corporeal death?" "Divine purpose is imposed on us by the inherent substance and ground of the universe." "From simplistic ghost stories to complex theological systems, the human experience has always led to a world view that includes alternate realities." "Can this delicate balance of temperature, atmosphere, and light-energy that breathes life into a wondrously complex biosphere called Earth be just an accident?" "The quest, then, is not so much to determine how the human mind can be derived from our organic bodies, but whether." "Can it be that our liberal, secular educations are couching us all in a frame of mind that no longer allows us to conceive openly of worlds and life beyond the temporal?" "Far from miracles happening only in ancient days, people still experience other-worldly phenomena daily.". Soft Cover. Very Good., Athena Books, 1991, 3<

"Well-written and informative."
