The first laser pulse autocorrelation at relativistic intensity and the first observation of Thomson backscattering from laser-accelerated electrons were carried out at the Jena laser facility and are documented and explained in detail in this book. Intense laser pulses exceeding an intensity of 1018 W/cm2 for infrared wavelengths enable us to explore the regime of relativistic optics with exciting phenomena such as laser particle acceleration. In this work a novel, powerful but compact and versatile experimental scheme, coined "photon collider", is presented. It provides counter-propagating, focused, ultra-short laser pulses and the diagnostic means to accurately achieve spatial and temporal overlap of these pulses.
