Los rancheros ocupan un lugar peculiar en la cultura y jerarquía social de México, ya que se encuentran entre los indígenas de las zonas rurales y la gente en las grandes urbes. Además de sumar sólo 20% de la población total mexicana, los rancheros forman la mayoría de la población mexicana inmigrante de Estados Unidos. Aunque por lo general son mestizos, los rancheros no se consideran indígenas, sino que se identifican principalmente con su herencia cultural española. Son muy activos en cuanto a la búsqueda de oportunidades, por lo que tienden a llevar una vida más móvil. La característica del progreso y el individualismo asertivo que valoran los rancheros contrasta drásticamente con la imagen común que se tiene de los mexicanos de las zonas rurales, la cual es una imagen que presenta una identidad comunal y públicamente sumisa ante la gente de mayor estatus social. Durante 15 años, Marcia Farr estudió una comunidad trasnacional de familias rancheras que radicaron simultáneamente en la ciudad de Chicago y en su pueblo de origen en Michoacán, México. En esta representación etnolingüística, Marcia Farr examina tres estilos representativos sobresalientes del habla que caracteriza a los rancheros: la franqueza (forma de hablar sincera, franca y directa); el respeto (forma de hablar respetuosa y con deferencia); y el relajo (lenguaje humorístico que permite la crítica verbal artística del orden social sostenido a través del respeto). La autora estudia la construcción de la identidad local de un análisis extensivo del lenguaje e identidad entre los mexicanos trasnacionales. A parte de dar a conocer la historia de los rancheros en México por primera vez en la versión en inglés para una audiencia americana, la autora presenta un análisis del discurso racial de los rancheros en el contexto de la historia sobre raza y etnias en México y en Estados Unidos. Basada en una observación participativa intensiva, un análisis exhaustivo del habla cotidiana, entrevistas informales, e investigación documental, este trabajo resulta en una perspectiva innovadora de las vidas de los rancheros que, especialmente, presenta al lector una introspectiva experimentada por ellos mismos.
