[ED: Softcover], [PU: Wissenschaft + Technik Ve], In the context of the globalisation of markets and of a world-wide increacing exchange of information, international activities gain considerable significance, not least for companies from the mechanical and plant engineering industry. Over and above pure export needs, foreign direct investments are undertaken to better serve local markets on the one hand, and as part of the search for cost savings on the other. Such projects, however very often suffer from high frictional losses. Many foreign ventures may even completely fail after a very short time. The production function, as one of the central and competitioncritical company functions, is significantly affected by these developments and, therefore, is of special interest. This doctoral thesis aims to answer the question of how international production activities have to be designed in order to successfully meet the challenges of the international environment in a long-term perspective. Based on "Internationalisation" and " Manufacturing Strategy" literature, as well as on results gained by the author through preliminary studies, a model is developed, which, based on a systems theory approach, allows the representation and evaluation of international production networks. The basic modules of this model are: The configuration of production activities, the co-ordination of production activities, influencing factors internal to the company, influencing factors from the companys international environment, and an evaluation model for international activities. Production activities are examined on three different levels, namely, the general strategic company level, the production function, which is to be designed company-wide, and the single production departments at the individual company locations. Both the model and the propositions deduced from it are scientifically evaluated through an empirical examination based on a case study approach. The validation is restricted to German machine tool manufacturing companies with foreign production sites. The outcome of the studies is presented and compared with the theoretical results elaborated.
